what would you choose to stock it with if you had a choice?

I would get s red tiger oscar, a red devil, or other smaller african chiclids like jewels or convicts.

I think part of your choice should depend on the parameters of your tap water. If your water is very acidic (ph of 6.6 or less) then fish like tetras, corys and angels will thrive in it. If it is very alkaline (7.5 or more) then you may want to consider cichlids. It is much easier to pick fish that will thrive in your water than to try to adjust the water with peat or coral sand.

Having said that, my tap pH is 7.0 but I have little buffering capacity. My 75 gallon has tetras, corys, SAEs and angels and they all do just fine. They make a very good mix. I still plan to get either 2 or 4 blue rams but haven't done it yet. That may happen this week as I was in a LFS on Saturday that had about 10 of them.

I plan on purchasing a 75 gallon tank and it will house a pleco, a severym and an oscar.

Make sure you have extra filtration because those are VERY messy fish. The old "one inch per gallon rule" definitely doesn't apply to them. Maybe 1" per 3 or 4 gallons.

I know the inch per gallon rule doesn't apply

We have it figured out, we compared it to other setups with the same fish and we should be fine!

I would go for a pair of severums and a nice school of dither fish like rainbows.

I would do a biotope. I'm thinking West African with a pair of kribs, a large school of congo tetras, and a shoal of upside down catfish. You could even plant it with anubias, and eleocharis, and some vallisneria if your lighting was good. But that's just me. I'm a big :nerd:

I'm jealous, I want to move back to FL and set mine up already.

I'd do pretty much what my 240l aquarium holds, which is lots of plants and small peaceful shoaling species. I've had a lot of set ups and found the well-planted community to be the most rewarding and interesting. Lots of Rasboras, small Catfish, different Tetras, you know the type.

What are you going to stock? :D Good luck with it!
