I recently bought 3 stiphoon sp. gobies, however underestimating their algea eating power they have completely cleaned the tank in a few weeks and now ive no idea what to feed them.

I've tried algea wafers but they dont seem to work.

Any ideas and what do you feed yours?

thanks for any help you can give

Mine ate bloodworms happily, but supposedly they eat any common foods.
Have you tried putting some soft leaved plants like elodea rooted in the tank? They may eat that.
If not, loan them to me and they can stuff themselves in my 8gal planted!

Stiphodon are primarily aufwuchs feeders, so you do need a mix of green foods and small invertebrates. If you have a garden pond (without fishes) then scooping up some algae and bringing it in for the fish would be one option. Otherwise, blanched lettuce, sushi nori, vegetarian (livebearer) flake food, etc. Blended prawns and peas supposedly work well, especially if smeared onto stones. Don't overdo the meaty part of the diet -- in omnivorous fishes, eating too much meat causes long-term health problems, from constipation upwards (much as in humans, really!). Meaty foods are a treat, not a staple.

One thing: these are mountain stream fishes. They need LOTS of water flow and oxygen, and if there isn't enough of both, they will die.

Cheers, Neale

I kept these fish for all of about a fortnight, before trading them in. They're subtropical (almost coldwater) fish that live in mountain streams in asia from what i researched. The males look dramatically different to the females, and to get the best out of them, a piece of flat slate on the bottom of the tank is the answer (I could tell you why but that would spoil the surprise).

When i bought them they were simply labelled as "gobies" and I bought them, and ID'd them (which took a long time!) and then realised they weren't for me. They ate algae in my tanks while I had them.

nmonks - Ive used the idea of taking algea from an outdoor pond to feed other fish so i think ill try that again. i also like the idea of peas smeared on stones, so ill be sure to try that.

If they start to luuk thin ill try frozen foods

thanks for the help!
