So the PetsMart here sells what they call "Rainbow Gobies" but that didn't appear to be a real thing. It also had a very different species name which looks nothing like the fish in the tank Or in the tanks of the people who own them. Apparently the "Rainbow Goby" is actually Stiphodon ornatus, the rainbow Stiphodon. Anyway, I'm thinking of getting one, but I just want to check a few things first.

1. I have three albino bristlenose plecos in my twenty gallon long. That's it for right now. Temp is about 78, maybe 79. I plan to add a few common livebearers to the tank on wednesday, probably platies or guppies. Nothing too unusual. Will the S. ornatus be suitable in this set up? I have black sand over most of the floor and some plant substrate still poking out of the back portion. It is moderately planted and contains two very large pieces of driftwood, runs on two filters (Fluval 30, Aqueon 40).

2. Would I need to get more than one? Seriouslyfish didn't say anything about keeping multiples, only not to have multiple males in smaller setups, but it didn't state that they needed the company of the same species. Just want to check on that. I'm only really interested in one of these guys, maybe two.

3. SF also recommends pebbles and stones in the tank. Are these supposed to just be scattered about or built into some sort of structure?

4. Also, I have a bunch of betta food leftover. Will any of these fish eat it? Is it okay to do that? If not, I'll just get some tropical food. For the Stiphodon, I plan on just growing some algae on some rocks or something outside in a bucket of water and adding those to the tank every so often. I read they also like the occasional bloodworm.

Any additional information would be stellar!

I just got a pair of these about a month ago! Awesome fish! Now that I have the Stiphadons I want to get rid of my bn.

1. It should be fine with that group of fish. Set up some flat rocks at an angle into the sand as they like to borrow under the rocks.
2. I would just get one for this set up. The pair that I have I almost never see together. So one should be fine.
3. I would make like a path where there is higher flow. I have a small powerhead at the bottom for them they like the water flow.
4. They eat algae like crazy! I usually put in a small sheet of algae every morning and its gone by the evening. They are algae grazers and shouldn't have too much meaty foods. I'm actually having issues with this right now as the female likes to eat the other fishes food. Her belly isn't looking too good. So I'm thinking of doing a few day fast for everyone or moving her to quarantine.

Oh thanks! I will definitely pick up one then.

Can I fee the betta pellets to the livebearers? That would be nice.

I don't see why they wouldn't eat them. Were you thinking guppies or molly's? Guppies eat pretty much anything!

I'll probably go the platy route, but if I see some attractive guppies, I may pick out a few of them. I'm planning on feeding the fry to my puffers.
