hello, what would an ideal set up be to keep stingrays? and are there any plants that can be kept with them(why are ray tanks always bare?)
how come i never see any stingrays with shoals of little fish, surely if theyre well fed they would ignore a shoal of tetras?
and most importantly where do you find rays?
im sorta half serious about getting into rays at some point in the future but atm im just curious about them theyre so facinating!

Hi, you see stingray tanks always bare because stingrays are bottom dwellers and decorations take up room in a stingray tank. I keep shoals of tetras with my stingrays that are well feed and my stingrays never bother my tetras.

Ideal set-up: As big as you can make it.
Any plants: Possibly, but they do eat aquatic plants, so people dont generally try it, allthough theres no harm in it.
Why are they bare: To create maximum swimming/bottom space.
Shoals of smaller fish: Not sure on that one, probably dither fish like danios would be ok as theyre quick, however other stuff might not be so lucky, you would just have to try...
Where do you find rays: In the wild or in captivity? In the wild most species are found in south america (potamotrygon species) and in asia there are whip tail rays, which are really cool, but hard to come by. In captivity, the best places are specialist shops (like wildwoods, who specialise in oddballs) and importers, like tropicalimports.co.uk).
I wrote an artical on them, its pinned at the top of the oddball section so have a look.

ok this is dumb,

i was watching cribs and tommy lee had a shark/ ray tank with full decor.........he ha d a lepard shark i remeber. in a 500 gallon tank.

LOL I saw that too. I didn't see the whole thing but, I'm guessing those were blue dot stingrays, which are saltwater.

TBH ponds really arent that expensive...You can buy pre-formed ones at gardencentres, or build a big, square brick wall, about 2 feet high and put in the pond liners etc and it probably will cost less than a brand new 6x2x2, and that would be for like an 8x4x2...But then theyre much better in tanks IMO for viweing, but for sheer space ponds are great.
