Hi guys, a newbie on here- so hello!!!

I have a fly river turtle and have been keeping him with all kinds of fish for around 4 years with no problems. I am toying with the idea of getting a stingray (a retic) to go in with him. I trust the turtle and am 100% sure he will leave the ray be. However, should he accidentally land on the ray or unknowingly corner it or something and it defends itself, how dangerous is the barb? I have seen rays and frts together and read about them etc but wondered if there were any horror stories or advice? Cheers!!

T1Karmann on here has one with rays, no issues for him. The rays i had had my polypterus's sit on top of them countless times and they never tried stinging them. As for how dangerous the barbs are i wouldnt like to say, wouldnt wurry about it though because you have a agressive ray i dont think you will have any issues.

Retic's are nice rays just hard to keep, what size tank are they going into ? If it#s pretty large i'd go for a differnt species off ray

Its 6'7"x 30" x26"(h). Is the water chemistry particularly important (I know it has to be very clean) but mine is very high pH- around 8. Is that too high? Thanks

isnt 30" only two foot? Not big enough for an adult retic and they are a smaller species!!

Id be carefull, personally wouldnt risk it... I had my Motoro, the most placid 'bathmat' on earth and he let the clownloach ride on his back and tried to shoal with the discus and all it took was the very expensive Arrowana to surprise the ray when he came down the tank for food (same as he did every day!!!) and that was it, Raymond stung him and he was paralysed... he died pretty quickly but the look of confusion in his eyes when he couldnt move3 or breathe :( i wont forgive myself because i feel it wasmy fault somehow...

30" is over two foot 12" in a foot. size wise it's fine for a retic for life imo (although not many seem to make it very long), you could always look for scobina and hystix although you don;t really see them ffor sale, they'd both be fine in the tank or you could go with marbled motoro but you'd have to upgrade at some point.

As for the PH just acclimatise the fish and you'll be fine. If you start messing with the PH of the water you'll most likely mess it up at some point, by this i mean a lack of concentration and forgot to use RO water / ph down liquid etc you'll shock the fish.

Theres a very expensive stocking in there and it's getting on fine. I'd love to have a Fly river turtle , you'll find there isnt many about at all now.

Thanks guys, after due consideration I have decided not to risk it (the arrowana story swayed it!) I couldn't live with myself if the turtle got hurt. They are getting pretty rare and I am fortunate enough to have 2 (in separate tanks!). One I have had for 4 years and the other I rescued from a bath just after christmas! He was in a bad way but after 3 months of trips to the vets every 3 days, antibiotics, treatment for blood poisoning, treatment for shell rot, treatment for metabolic bone disease and an operation he finally pulled through! Definately not going with the ray, I'll stick to Tanganyikans! Cheers

Thats cool, however you will find with almost any combination that there is a risk either way

I think that you have made the right decision, if the balance is right now dont sway it. A local store has one of those turtles and he is gorgeous, you are extremely lucky x
