Hi, this may sound like an odd question. Presumable either my female molly or platy gave birth last night. Icame down this morning to lots of dead fry on the bottom of the gravel.

My question is can fish give birth to fry that has already died inside her?

Rebecca.

Short answer is yes. There are many reasons but I think the main one is stress.

Sorry for your loss! :(  She possibly gave birth to early, and the fry were immature.

Are the fish new to the tank? Like Dave said, stress could cause this to happen and being new to the tank or having new fish added could have been stressful.

Ok thankyou. The water is all fine etc and nothings changed and i leave her in the tank to avoid stress so i think another fish may have bothered her then. Ive had lots of successfull batches of fry off my females so it was abit odd. Oh well should hopefully get a nice batch next time.
Thankyou. No they have been in for a long time now. The dead fry were quite big in size too. I might never know what happened just got to look forward to my next lot off them :)
Thankyou all.

Sorry for your loss, Seems a shame that happens but unfortunately it does, think possibly stress is major factor in this.

Better luck next time.

Thanks Ch4rlie. Yeah usually they breed really well and ive got some nice fry off them but cleary the female was stressed out by something. I guess it was my male molly as hes a boistrous bugger haha. Oh well. Thankyou all :)

Ok, I was thinking they may have been born prematurely.
You'll get more soon :) Good luck
