I have not yet successfuly bred any of my bettas :( right now im trying my first male with my 3rd female cause shes my plumpest. As soon as he seen her he made a nest.. I released her a few hrs later . He started attacking her then flaring, attacking her then flaring etc i took her out cause i was scared. He killed a female a while back doing the same thing i guess ill leave her in the container a little longer.. In the making they destroyed the nest a lttle bit. Its still there tho :( its been 3 months since ive had these i admit it gets frustrating but im being patient still :D

What is your set up like? Tank size? Temperature? How did you condition the pair and how long? Are they pet store bettas? How long have you had them? Even if the male makes a nest right away its best to leave the female in the glass for 2-3 days.

One more question to add to novas questions
How high is the water?

Nova I never under stood the pet shop thing do pet shop Bettas have a rep of being infertile?

Yea they are pet store bettas, about 3 weeks conditionjng, 5 inches high, 78 degrees, its a split 10 gallon tank so they r in a 5 gallon i guess with 2 plastic plants so she can hide from him no gravel, conditioned them with brine shrimp and daphnia(freeze dried), ive had the female for about 3 weekks and the male 3 months

Ime frozen works a lot better then frozen try turning the heat up to 80'f and lower the water to 4" that may work did for me my Bettas live at 80'f anyway but just try that it may work I personally don't believe in freeze dry, frozen and live are the better choices :)

The only problem is the male eing to aggressive.. He wasnt with the first female, they lived together for a few weeks.. The second he killed, this one im trying not to kill. If i lower the water hnis nest will break cause the cup is taped to the top of the tank cause it sinks. So i cant do tht. I cant find live foods in this town and dont have time to drive an hour to petsmart. I did howeer turn the temp up to 80 they r nonstop flaring at each other so when i come home from work tonite ill release her again she seems ready

I don't personally think that breeding pet store bettas is "bad" one of my close friends (and one of the TOP breeders in the country) started with just petstore bettas, they were all he could find at the time, and a lot of his really nice bettas right now can be traced back to those pet store bettas. The problem with petstore bettas, especially the males is their age, after like 8 or 9 months of age bettas begin to lose fertility and a lot of the male bettas in store are at least that age or older. A less fertile betta is less likely to breed, and more likely to produce infertile eggs.

conditioned them with brine shrimp and daphnia(freeze dried), ive had the female for about 3 weekks and the male 3 months

Freeze dried foods are not a good idea for bettas, they can expand in the stomach and cause internal damage, even soaking them before feeding doesn't eliminate all of the risk factors. They are all not high enough in protein to be good conditioning foods, so that might be one of your problems. It's a much better Idea to feed frozen or live!!

Do you have another male you can try? Some males are just plain too aggressive to breed! I would pull them, and condition a new pair, breeding isn't worth it when the male just keeps killing all of the females!

My crowntail male just died today so i cant.. And i just got back from work and the nest is double in size and im a bit shocked cause the females ovipositer is sticking out further and shes way plumper then this mornig?? Shes been ead down for 5 minutes straight.. Shud i release her??

THEY R SPAWNING :D YAYY IM SO EXCITEDDD:)))) LITERALLY TOOK EM 5 minutes and tey got eggs the first try:D i cant tell if they r eating them tho :( i hvent seen them go to the nest once
