I have a large Mollie, Platy, and Tetra tank. Every single female Mollie and Platy I have is hugely pregnant right now. Finally one of my Mollies has begun to have some fry. I watched her for 3 hours and she had about 20 fry. Only two were eaten and the rest were able to gain swim strength quick enough to go into planted plants and floating plants. Anyway, I have two questions.

1.) Why is my Mollie still HUGE? She is still real square looking too. I think she must have 20 more in her, or something.

2.) With fry sometimes this little orange clear ball would come out. I would look at it and it never unravled and began to swim like all the other fry. It looked like orange fish eggs on sushi. Is that some sort of after birth? Is it undeveloped fry? Is it something else? In the 20+ fry she had only 3 of those balls came out and she ate two right away, and our male Mollie ate the third.

She, the mother, didn't eat any fry only the two ball looking things. The Platies are actually who ate the two fry I said were eaten.

OH! I lied. One more question.

3.) How big/old will fry be when they stop hiding in planted/floating plants?

my guppies have babies continously- they have about 30 fry, stay looking heavily pregnant, and then a fortnight later, have 10-15 more, and so on.

Not sure about the orange ball thing.

The fry should start to come out after a week or two, when they are too big to be eaten/frightened by the adults.

HTH, merry.

She could well have more fry as they can stop and carry on again in a day or two.

The other thing is if the fish are very happy she'll be producing eggs, before giving birth, ready for the next batch of fry.
The eggs and the fry are about the same size, as the mother dose not supply the fry with any food.
So why the get larger is coz of the developing eggs.
