I've lost one guppy a day over the past four days. The 1st had dropsy like symptoms, with a swollen belly, loss of appetite, and 'pine cone scales'. The rest have gotten skinny over a day or two, lost interest in eating, weakened to the point they had trouble swimming, and died within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. I also noticed clear feces with two of them.
I was thinking something bacterial at first because of the swollen stomach on the first one, and started treatment with Maracyn Two. With the clear feces and skinniness, I'm now thinking some kind of parasite? Tonight I did a water change and switched treatment to General Cure (Metronidazole and Praziquantel). I've got one more guppy that is started to look skinny, and four that seem okay- but the others seemed okay too and went downhill very rapidly.
The other fish in the tank (rasboras and cory cats) seem to be unaffected- I've had no losses from them. If it is a parasite, this strikes me as odd- I'm not sure why this is only striking down the guppies. I checked on them this morning, and by midday had lost another- and the other fish had already eaten it almost entirely, which makes me very worried they could be infected now as well (I don't know which fish- could have been the shrimp as well).
The tank water stats are fine- O for ammonia, O for nitrites, low nitrates. It's a 20 gallon tank.
ANY advice would be great- I HATE losing fish- it makes me feel like a terrible fish keeper. This is the 2nd mass kill I've had with guppies and I just don't understand why.
