I popped home for a few days and want a nice few days they were, I was bored with nothing to do, until I remembered what I used to do when I was younger and in the same situation, go sticklebacking.

We have a brook that runs through our garden, so I found a net out of the garage and a gallon jar and went off with my camera in hand.

My mum thought it quite strange for a 20 year old lad to be standing by a brook fishing for stickleback with a net, but I enjoyed myself.

Anyways, here are a couple of pictures of the sticklebacks.

Sorry about the photos not being that great but the jar makes photos hard to pull off.
All of the fish I caught were out of the brook for minimal amounts of time to hopefully reduce any stress involved.

While I was sat there these two showed up

Beautiful pictures!
I wish we had a brook... all we have is a creek that is completely brown (or possibly dried up, depending on how long it has been since we got a nice rain.)

nice pics tomsteer,

The male only shows a red throat when they are in breeding, that female also looks very gravid with eggs.

Did you know the male will build a nest on the bottom with an in this way and an out that a way B).

Thanks everyone,

I think they'd look great in an aquarium and when I leave uni and live back at home for a while I might look at setting one up, I have endless perfect water! But that’s something else I’ll have to do some reading on.

StrontiumDog next time I’m home I’ll have a look around for any of the nests.

Here’s another shot of the female, it’s blurred and in a jar so not great but you get the idea.

Glad u lot liked it, they are beautiful fish.

My camera is the Panasonic FZ-20 for anyone who's interested.

Thanks, Tom

I'd like to say that sticklebacks are on the decline in the wild (uk) and therefor should not be caught and put in your tank, now or after uni.

great pics and I'm glad you put them back.

cheers, like i said i was gonna read up on them before i caught any to keep.

thanks for all the replies,

Tom
