is this a strip thermometer? If you stick those on anything other than the glass you are risking gettting a less accurate reading of the water temperature. Even sticking them directly to the glass means that they can't accurately show what temp the water is inside. You will effectively be insulating it with the vinyl. How much, I can't say.

I dont think they are desingned to work in water. It will be fine stuck on the glass, I was just stating that as they are on the external surface they will not provide an accurate reading of the water temp. However, it should be good enough for judging the temp within a +/- 2c range.

Generally speaking these types of thermometers are not very accurate anyway. They are based on thermochromic inks that change colour with heat. This technology is not a very precise way of measuring temperature as there is significant variability in the temperature range at which the colours activate/deactivate.

I only really need it for dramatic changes, after last year when my mum touched my tank and turned heater up full whack and boiled my fish

and it will be fine for that.

I have one of the stick on thermometers on my 10 gallon, and it's been fairly accurate. I purchased a traditional thermometer and added it into the tank a few days ago and they run nearly the same.

Traditional alcohol thermometers are generally the most accurate, the thermochromatic digital thermometers are normally self adhesive so it should just be a peal off and stick job.
