Sterilizing Nets

Hi,

I am just wondering what people do to steralize their nets after having to use them to move a sick fish or just as a matter of routine after using the net? Boiling water, chemicals, just rinse it?

I don't know what the 'right' thing to do is, but I use a salt bath every so often, and if it was used for something particularly frightening - a diluted bleach dip. Followed by a dip with chlorine removed or course. :)
 
Hi there,

I run a fish house/breeding operation, so have quite a few nets. For biosecurity, all my nets are immersed in a water bucket that contains a working strength solution of Protozin (an anti fungal / anti protozoan) and Myxazin (an anti bacterial), the solution is changed every 2 weeks.

Obviously for treating fish, both of these agents shouldn't be used at the same time (as aplies to lots of medicinal compounds), but as a sterilising/biosecurity measure it works just fine.

I don’t want to be "picky" but unless you use an autoclave a net it is not sterilized; the methods mentioned describe sanitizing not sterilizing.

But I just use boiling water to sanitize them.
 
i boil mine, for a few minutes then leave to soak. nothing special and i replace them every so often.

Ok fair call I was being lazy with my wording.

"sterilising A process in which all living cells including spores and viruses are either destroyed or removed from an object or habitat.

Disinfection The use of a chemical to kill or inhibit any micro-organism that may cause disease.

Sanitation Reducing the microbial population to levels that is considered safe by public health standards.

Pasturization Use of high temperatures to eliminate disease-causing micro-organisms from beverages etc."

So sterilising would be the ideal but I don't have an autoclave handy and I don't know if the net would handle 15 minutes at 121 degrees. I was really just looking at what people do to get a reasonably sanitised net.
