"sterilising" A Live Plant?

i have a huge bunch of java fern which is now too big for my hex
recently a betta of mine died from dropsy, in his last few weeks he took to nuzzling in this java fern

if i move this java fern (wood and all) to another tank, is there any chance of it transferring bad things to my other fish?

how do i effectively cleanse it so i know its safe and not kill it??

its the plant i've had the longest, and i'm quite attached to it.

A very weak bleach would work but would have to be very well washed to go back in with fish.

Dropsy isnt passed on fish to fish so I would be too worried.
