I have some stem plants in my tank, which are doing really well but have started to look unsightly.

Roots have been forming up the stem (I guess so the plant could survive/spread if bit were to snap off), making a bit of a maze for my fish. The roots travel down and are currently heading for the substrate. They are trapping debris and generally looking like a mess.

Is there a way to minimise the formation of these extra roots?

Can they be trimmed off without affecting the health of the plant?

mine are doing this as well, I just continue to trim normally and snip the extra roots growing up off and all has seemed well
