Hello everybody,

I am just getting ready to start fishkeeping again after a break of 30 odd years- well, the first attempt wasn't a great success. :rip:

Well, actually, I don't remember any mass deaths, more a general feeling that this fishkeeping lark wasn't as much fun as it should have been (certainly not for the fish). It might have been better if I hadn't tried to keep one or two of virtually everything in the shop, if I had known more about cycling, if I had saved some money for plants and other amenities (those poor kuhli loaches with nowhere to hide...)

Getting started again was my daughter's idea, but now I find I am more excited than anybody else. :D

Only this time I want to do things right- so am spending a lot of time researching. So far, we have bought 2 tanks (61x31 cms) - the idea being that one can eventually serve as quarantine/breeding tank and the other as a main tank. They are up and running with some plants in each, but no fish- that's for next week.

My main problem now is to decide on starter fish (afraid I have been overruled on the subject of fishless cycling). I have had danios or platies recommended; problem is I don't particularly want to fill the tanks up with either and if I only get one or two fish/tank presumably the tanks won't cycle. What I really want to keep, eventually, after cycling is: a small shoal of cories, 3 guppies (daughter's wish. not mine- and she wants them to breed, so that should fill the tanks up nicely- grrr), and eventually, eventually, given time, a pair of dwarf gouramis.

:hi: to the forums.

Danios are always suggested as cycling fish, I did my own cycle with them. Fishless is far kinder on the fish, can't you persuade, breeding is far more likely with happy fish. The-Wolf is the danio guru, sure the-wolf could suggest other cycling fish or put another argument for fishless cycling.

Welcome dwarfgourami! i would use platies to cycle my tank cuz they are gd hardy fish and handle a lot of different water conditions!
