About a year ago we lost our two giant oscars. It has taken some time, but we are now ready to start again. With our oscars we tried to introduce some other fish, but the oscars prefered to have the tank to themselves. Now that they are gone we would like to stear clear of oscars and try something new. We have a well established ( and empty) 125 gallon tank. We would like some interesting fish that will do well together. Any suggestions? We tend to lean toward semi-agressive tropical fish.

you could get some beautiful dwarf cichlids. theyre good community fish, just avoid having a lot of males. Black Knife Ghost Fish are beautiful and exotic tropical fish. And because of the size of the tank, you can get a few of them. They truly are beautiful. Or you could get a colony of female bettas or somne angelfish. Or maybe some larger gouramis such as kissing gouramis, chocolate, thick-lipped, snakeskin, pearl, or moonlight gourami. Or if your looking for something really exotic, get a ropefish
Or maybe make it a beautiful goldfish tank. Its all up to your taste in fish

When you say the tank is well established what do you mean? If the tank has been empty oc fish a year then nothing producing ammonia=dead bacteria colony.

+1.

Unless your adding ammonia yourself.

I'd go for some severum. I'm biased as I love them. The rotkeils and red spotted are really nice.

Its not completely empty. We have plants, a small plecko and a catfish that started out about 1 1/2 in long and is now about 4 in I would say. We do treat the water and test regularly. At last check the ammonia level was at 7.4 and we have had some trouble with nitrite levels but now have had that under control. We also have noticed some snails which we think came with the plants. I guess by empty I mean it is very empty for a 125 gal.

Crossfire, we did try a beta, but he kept getting himself stuck in the filtration system. I love ghost knifes, they are definitely on my list :).

Ammonia at 7.4? That cant be correct.

Barilius species would fit the bill in terms of their personalities and your tank size (presumeably 5-foot long or more) is suitable. I have B. canarensis, dogarsinghi and hukaungensis sharing a 560l with Humphead Glassfish; Denisons Barb (amongst others), but must confess that I have a strong temptation to move them on to concentrate on African and Central American fish.

Yes, that was my bad. I was thinking ph and typing ammonia. Ammonia is 0 and the ph is at 7.4 still as of tonight. Thank you all for the suggestions and keep them coming!

I love my African Cichlids, and they have huge personalities along with gorgeous colors! They are not great community fish but mine are housed with some albino barbs, rosey barbs,Blue gourmis, a peacock eel, Albino Bichar and a pleco. Most people would definatly advise against this because this should not work. However with everyone being so young it is working out just fine. The only problem I really have is my cichlids are food aggressive and I have to watch to make sure everyone eats! The barbs and gourmis where my first tank mates and I added some cichlids later. Everyone is happy and healthy right now so I just watch for aggression. Have fun fish shopping!
