I plan on createing a fish pond for koi carp this summer. would like it to be large enough to house several of the fish comfortabley and look nice, but im on a budget. what would be the best way to go about this?

Bigger the pond the better i would think 700 gallons is the starting point for koi carp, you need at least 4 feet of depth though

Yea iv done a little research and thats about what iv concluded as well.

if u dont mind me asking what is your budget?

Nothing over 200 bux would be preferable, but i guess ill end up paying watever it costs.

Iv been looking around at differant set ups to see what would best fit the needs of my fish and my budget, iv learned alot so far so hopefully ill be able to think of somthing soon and run it past you guys. thanks alot for the help :)

Well my dad is actually a natural pond contracter, and he charges $6000 for a base price (a lot of labor, and the materials arent cheap... I guess if you wanted to you could do a lot yourself... My dad just did our pond for $1000. You can check out my pond in my signature, and Also I sugest you go to this web site: http://www.aquascapedesigns.com for really good kits if you like the look of my pond.

:D iv seen your oscar pond, very nice, probably dont plan to put anything like that together thogh. iv looked around online and im leaning toward the cheap above ground tub method. my mum probably wouldn't approve of me digging up the yard and it would be easier to care for. the problem so far is where am i going to find a tub large enough for koi carp, at 4 feet deep and 700 gallons the minimum, locateing a large enough tub would will be a problem. most aquarium shops around here sell much smaller tubs for water gardens, but i dont think a couple carp will be too happy in there.

Where exactly is this frozen hell you are from? if you go with an above ground pond you have to insulate it because heat will be lost out the sides, that and there are no tubs that size within your budget, If you have massive DIY skillz you can build a pond out of marine grade Plywood with an EDPM liner. However the cheapest way would be to dig like there is no tomorrow.

Wisconsin, yep it gets cold here.

To deal with this i plan to use these large water heaters that my mum uses to keep the water from freezeing in the horse's water bucket. i figure a couple of these should keep it ice free. (i have poor DIY skills)

I have a feeling they dont make 4 foot deep 700g tubs, so im back to square one with this. How do i go about digging a pond? From what i understand you dig it all out to the appropriate size and lay down some kind of liner, but i have no idea what kind of liner to use or if there is any kind of special trick to digging a pond. :/

Hi

A bit of lateral thinking about getting the pool. Contact your local Baptist Church and ask them where they got their baptism pool from. We currently use a free standing circular one that is 4ft deep and 6ft diameter made of fibreglass. This summer it is going to be used to store fish in while the pond is being sorted out. It is worth a try you know - if you can't find what you want at the lfs.

Villy
