Hi there
I have only just joined the forum and I am looking for some info on setting up an Oscar i.e Ciclid Aquarium.
How many fish would be safe etc etc which fish I can as tankmates etc etc.
I have seen a Fire Eel which the person at the Aquatic Centre said should be fine as a bottom dweller.
Any help with my new set up would be Greatly appreciated
all the best for now

That tanke will be fine for an oscar (and other fish), but I would leave the fire eel out, they can reach 2ft(and more) in aquariums, and would need a tank of 6x2x2 when adult.

The number of fish all depends on the type of fish you are going to add.
With that size tank (112 USG) you can have a quite a few other cichlids in that tank, there really is alot to choose from.

If it was my tank though, and I wanted an oscar I would do:
1 oscar
1 GT
1 convict
1 FM

I think that will look good and be a nicely balanced aquarium.

if it were me, i'd go with an oscar, jd, gt and a nice bigish pleco. like a royal or something. but that's just me. i don't like convicts or fm's :)

Don't know if you meant to make another post Beardy, but I wouldn't have 2 oscars in that size tank. The tank could handle them, but I would be worried about fighting. If you get 2 males then one would most likely kill/badly injure the other. If you get a male and female and they pair up, then its very unlikely they will tolerate tankmates. Two females could work, but its not 100% guaranteed. And with no easy way of sexing oscars, its abit of gamble to have more than one.

The meeki might get beat up by the GT, I would go with imo 'nicer' cichlids so the stocking would be something or the other like this;
oscar
Green terror
Texas cichlid or Jack dempsey
Still all cichlids have their own personality so you could have some troubles along the way, maybe a small shoal of diversion fish of your choice would also work. You would have to do plenty of reg water changes and have good filtration though. :good:

If it was me, I would put a Oscar and a Blue jack dempsey in there. I have them in together and they do just great! The blue is a lot more mild tempered than the regulars, He doesn't bother nobody aybody and nobody bothers him. It's quite peaceful actually. :good:
