Starting A Marine Tank

hi all...
i have 6 ft 300L tank give to me (see welcome section)

i was going tropical.. but will a little nudging fro a few on here and my lil girl wanting nemo and dory.. i may be going marine...

what do i need and how to set up etc.. i could do with a dummies guide.. incsalt.. feeding the fish/ plants.. what stuff can go together..

I have so far..
a fluval 405 filer.
2 heaters.
sand with gravel either end of the tank
1 small 1 large circulation pump (if needed). a blue moonlight "lamp"...

tank currently empty except for the sand and gravel....

what next...

hmmm been looking through..
with the price etc of live rock.. it might be very expensive to start.. especially a 6 foooter..

what i may do is make the 6 foot tropical.. unless you can explain it no need to be that expensive and dont need yet live rock etc...

and use our small tank to do a small marine tank

i think if you use a filter, you can add i bit of rock at a time?
someone verify this?
