Starting a firemouth tank

Hi,

I've decided that with my last 55gal I want to do a firemouth tank. I want to get enugh small ones so that I can get atleast one pair but not so many so Im not stuck with too many extra fish when they mature. I was thinking 4. Would that be enough assure a pair and is there a way to sex them when quarter size?

You will not be able to determine gender at that size. Four specimens would most likely give you a pair, but there is always a small chance that your luck is really awful and you end up with four of the same sex!
