So, I'm finally at university, moved in, and ready to start the female betta sorority tank I've wanted for over a year. One of my male bettas had to be euthanized today (He had a stomach tumor that took over his gills and was killing him), so I need a project to take my mind off his death.
The tank is 15 gallons (long). It's got a play sand substrate and is planted with some corkscrew vals, Bacopa monnieri (I think?), and a couple java fern. This is going to be a low-tech tank (but with lots of light, and dosed with various SeaChem Flourish products). The tank is currently decorated with a couple chunks of driftwood and some terra-cotta pots as hiding places. Before adding the bettas, I plan to add more vallis, some hygrophila polysperma and some cryptocoryne wendtii I have laying around, plus whatever I can find at the pet store tomorrow amongst their plants.
The tank also houses: 3 panda corydoras, 3 peppered corydoras and 3 otocinclus affinis.
How many bettas should I add to the tank total?
How many bettas should I add at a time?
When introducing new bettas, do I need to rearrange the entire tank? Or is it less-stressful to just add the new girls?
As for feeding, my males get Hikari Betta BioGold, Bettamin Flake, and Shrimp pellets on occasion. I'm assuming this diet is acceptable for females also?
I've read that young VT/PK males are often sold as females. Is there an easy way to sex them in the store? What behavioural characteristics can I look for in a sorority setting to identify an imposter in the group?
My goal in all of this is a natural (non-tacky), attractive looking tank with a colourful stocking loaded with personality.
