hey,
iv probably told u guys that im starteing a guppy tank this summer like a million times and yesterday i started. iv been prepareing for it for a while now, buying gravel and wat not. but when i finally put water in, there was crap every where. dead leaves and dirt just floating around in my water. so i turned on the filter and took care of that problem. but the water has taken on a greenish color it must be from the gravel because iv never had this trouble with my water b4. i added chemicals that claimed to clear up my water and remove iron but it has done very little. in my filter system i dont have a real carbon filter with the coal and stuff in it, iv got just a coarse spunge. it works great takinging out the solid impuritys but it does little or nothing to clear up the water. i guess im just going to have to buy a carbon filter. im not like a filter expert or anything but i think that this might be the problem. when i used to have a carbon filter i never had this problem. if u guys think u can help please by all means speak up!

(p.s.) b4 i added the new gravle i cleaned it like 5 times really good, i dont know how i missed that crap.

I am now removeing the water and cleaning the gravel.....again. my dad is supposed to pick me up a new carbon filter cartridge on the way home tonight. im very ancious to get sum plants and fish in there but this whole water thing has put me back a day. hopefully all will begin to to go well. -_-

sounds like a algae bloom that carbon filter should work.pretty soon the algae will die off as long as you dont add any fish so they wont release any nutrients tha algae
can use

Please don't add fish before you cycle your tank... If you don't know what cycling is there are some brilliant pinned topics. They will save you no end of headaches - trust me I did it the wrong way...

so did i.i used to have 2 guppies and 4 neons in a 10 g with out it cycling.i lost all my neons and then eventually my 2 guppies.cycle your tank first pls B)

lol chill out im not stupid, :D i got my carbon filter and the green has gone away. iv also added my plant bulbs for my tropical plants, they should be growing soon. everything is going much better. ;) im not gunna starte adding my guppies until the live plants are grown and stuff so maybe in like a month the tank should be redy.

by the way, baloon molly i like ur new fish thingy on ur sig :fun:

you dont have to cycle your tank if you have an old filter from another tank. you can switch it. And guppies would probly perfer a sand bottem because they like to lay on the bottem at night and the gravel can hurt them.

and when you do buy the guppies remeber 2-3 females for every male.

lol yes i know ;) , but iv alredy got gravel there. maybe one day wen i get a bigger tank i can try that  . but for now im useing gravel. yes i know 2 females to every male.

thnx as you know i am aproud grandfather of baby mollies but that is a different story.what kinds of guppies are you thinkin of gettin.glad to see things are turning around

ya me to i was so [censor] [censor] off when the water wouldnt clear up. im not planning to get any special kind of guppy just some lfs assorteds. the ones at my lfs r awsome lookin. last time i check they had a split tail but it looked like and endler.
