I am looking for a stand alone ultraviolet sterilizer. By that I mean one that comes with its own water pump. Does such a device exist? I need uv because I cannot defeat green water permanently. I don't want to use chemicals anymore.

I don't ever seen one like the one you're looking for. Most just needs a Powerhead/Water pump and it's good go (10/12 inch numbers). Then there is a pond keepers trick using "Barley Straw" over flowing water and it clears te water.

I had never heard of the barley straw before. That is very interesting. Some studies have shown it doesn't always work, but then what does work 100%?

fish r fun make a stand alone uv sterilizer.

Too bad they are in the UK. Are UV sterilizers new to the aquarium hobby? If only I could invent one and mass produce it and mass distribute it!

My dad has a big pond and at one time there was so much algae it was like pea soup, so we heard about this straw business and decided to give it a go, you can buy little packages for it i think but we just got a big bad and put as much straw in it as we could, that cleared a lot of it up. but not all so maybe it only gets rid of really bad algae in the water (i.e not on the pumps or whatever) and unless you use a bad with fine mesh then i suspect a lot of straw would fall out and fall to the bottom of the tank, i guess its worth a try.

I think the straw needs to decompose in the presence of oxygen and sunlight for it to be effective. My aquarium gets no sunlight, so I don't think it would work for me.

i should take delivery of the 9 watt version of the fish r fun sterilizer tomorrow , my tanks like pea soup so hoping it will clean the tank right up :) , will be making a post on its progress with before and after picys this week sometime
