Hi,

I just got 5 guppies yesterday. 2 males and 3 females. I looks like all three females are pregnant. The oldest females gravid spot is light but she is getting fat. The other two females, that r much younger in age, have a smaller belly and a darker gravid spot. What r some early signs of getting close to giving birth? Also if I don't get a pic soon, can I see a pic of a squared female?

Edit: I just looked at one of the pinned topics: Stages of a female guppys pregnacy and more, Im not sure when to put her in my breeding trap. How long can a female be inside it?

hi
Judging by the way my females look when there about to give birth i would say that the cobra is maybe a week or two off and the rainbow one looks a few days off to a week off. Regarding putting them in a breeding box this can stress them out and if u have to put them in only do it for a maximum of 2 days.
Dont take my word for anything though i am just going by my experiance.

I used to wait until they started dropping them and then put them in the box so that they are not stuck in there for ages. The boxes dont always make for an easy delivery as the fish needs plenty of excercise during labour. I now I have a big seperate fry tank and as soon as the females are a couple of weeks pregnant I put them in there too. They seem to get used to all the fry around them and then when they give birth dont tend to eat them. The tank is also heavily planted so the newborns can hide more easily. Ive found this more natural way the best as the females dont stress out at all and then die!

hey quick question, they're getting ick. Would it be bad for the babies because they're on the way? Would the treatment be safe?

Okay, how big is the tank? How long has it been set-up? How many fish and what kind? Tank Cleaning schedule? Also, yes it's bad. If they are born( pretending it's immidate, they will die). The babies mgith come out fine later or they might come out with deformaties or malnurished. I would up the temp to 82 degree's. And get some ick med's. Test your water and post the results.

The female in the first pic is around 2 weeks at the most, the others no where near.

Here is what to look for.... (this is how a heavily pregnant guppy will look when ready to drop)

Breeding traps are fine to use, agree with about only ever keep a fish in them for a max of 48 hours.

Usually a heavy pregnant fish will be pretty chilled in a trap as she will be relieved that others cant bother her, and if she is ready to drop she will just pretty much be static in the trap.

Best thing to do if u use a trap is, place the feame in and then turn the tank lights out and cover the tank, this will reduce stress and relax the fish more.

Good luck with them..

Be sure to watch out for these signs when u think your fish is due to drop...

Dwelling on bottom

hanging around near srface (usually corners)

Dwelling over plants

Being very unsocial

not swimming much and looking near on static.

Dwelling near internal filters.

Hanging around the heater.

Good luck :)

thanks Wayne. After a bit of reading I realized that the cobra was pretty far off. I thought the rainbow female was close, is she not?

Im sorry i seem to have put my predicitons the wrong way round lol...

The first pic is no where near, the second one (which i persume you mean by the rainbwo one) is about 2 weeks APPROX..

These are not accurate of course but going by experience of many years, that my guess :)

Update: Now the "rainbow girl" is looking more prego. It's been about 3 days, sence the last post of this topic, and now im wondering when she'll give birth.
