Are sponge filters a good idea for betta tanks? Opinions please. Can you cycle with these? Will biospira work with these? Anyone know how to make them? I want some sort of filter for my 30 gallon, how do these work? Sorry for the huge load of questions, I know nothing about these filters.

Also, if you had a small sponge filter, could it be used in a small tank?

I have a round sponge filter in my 3 gallon. It's a grow-out tank for my guppy fry but I'm going to be putting a betta in there soon. I had to pinch the hose because the bubbles were coming out too fast, the reasen being is that its rated for a 10 gallon :X LoL. Mine looks like this: http://hometown.aol.com/roscoes45s/images/...ge%20filter.jpg
But you can get square ones made by Pen Plax or whatever its called. All you do is hook them up to an air pump, and rinse the sponge out when it gets dirty, and when you squeeze it and it can no longer retain it's shape, you throw it out and by a new one. My tank isn't cycled but I guess you could use them in a cycled tank.

Thanks. I've decided I want a HOB filter for my 30 whenever I can get the money. But I still would like and appreciate info on sponge filters, as Dory might like a filter system.
