Need to get some, cheapest place in UK please?

I have to say i made my own out of a length of clear hose, an air pump with air tube and stone and a cut down cheap sponge. It works a treat but then i had 6 tanks to set up so it worked out cheaper that way. Sorry not much help was it lol

Have you not seen any in the LFS' near to you as all mine seem to stack them from between £3-£6

Funnily enough, I've never seen a sponge filter in any LFS near me. I would attempt to make them myself, as there will be.. 3 tanks I think, but would rather just buy a working filter lol.

Do you mean one of those that has the sponge and like a plastic tube running through it? I always used them and wanted one the other day for my goldfish and you cant get them anywhere now! I need one as well. How did you make one...I like a bit of diy!

I must be going soft helping people out in the betta section

Here is a great site for buying air powered filters and all sorts of bits and pieces for breeding tanks and fish rooms/houses i got a lot of my filters from them

http://www.ta-aquaculture.co.uk/

just click on where it says Air Filters in the left hand panel.

Ok as so many have asked -

Huey hung filters are quite cheap with Eddie Howden -

Found these great corner sponge filters from Ultimate Aquatics and they are fairly cheap

I'm buying a light unit from there for my Rio 125, so postal costs are zero.

I can also recommend Tim Addis's site he is a great guy and the prices and turnaround from order to delivery is good :good:

Thats more complicated than mine lol

Apparently there are a few vids on you tube on how to make them but then it was Mel that told me that

If I'm honest, I don't even know what or why a sponge filter?
Why do they differ at all from the regular underwater filter that is housed in plastic? All I ever remember from using them was how gunky the sponges got - does this not happen in sponge filters?

They do its just there is ALOT less current with sponge filters than ones with powerheads, its all alot slower and cheaper too

Sponge filters are a cheap and cheerful way to filter your tank, but essential in a fry tank where small fish can get pulled into the housing and drown or get minced up.

Had both happen to me at some stage, had a mechanical filter in a fry tank, hubby went down and noticed that something wasn't plugged in and there we have minced babies

That was my first spawning you can imagine how I felt about him going down to the shed after that

Also had fish swim up in a corner filter unit before now and die, so I try to avoid anything other than sponge or UG internal filters, got 3 external filters but the outtake pipe has a sponge on it to prevent fry or small fish getting sucked up. Not pleasant cleaning the sponges but far safer.

See if they will order them in for you. Mine does special orders all the time! There are a lot of things that aren't popular enough to keep in stock all the time, but that people may still want.
