sponge filter

Is there any way that I could just use a biowheel filter and cover up the sucker(I have absolutely no idea what the part that sucks up the water is called so I just call it that) with like a sponge or something that I can use so that I don't suck up fry? Is it possible to use a small pieces of cut glass, not broken or anything, to make an in tank refugium?

I used sponge before and it got clogged up try using nylons pieces and attach it with rubber hair elastics
