I have a 200L aquarium filtered by an Ehiem Classic 2215 filter. In my tank I have:

5 Odessa Barbs
7 Red Skirt Tetras
1 Blue Gourami
1 Yellow Gourami
2 Angel Fish
2 Cories
1 Bristlenose
1 RTBS

I have plenty of plants, a couple of rocks and a nice piece of bog wood. The water temp is set to 27C. I change about 40% of the water every 3 weeks, the most recent one was 8 days ago, when I also cleaned out my filter (every 3 months). A water test had no ammonia, no nitrite and 30 nitrate. Im not sure why nitrate is that high with the recent water change, maybe i am over feeding? The fish dont seem to be bulging at the belly.

A few weeks ago I noticed my RTBS had a split down its dorsal fin, right to its back. It didnt seem to bother it and a couple of days later I noticed it was joined up again. Last week I noticed again the RTBS had a split dorsal fin, which again had joined back up a couple of days later. I just thought this might be something that happens with this fish, but just now I noticed a couple of my Odessas back fins have a couple of splits in them. Whats the deal with this? How can I stop it? All my fish seem happy, except the Odessas, who are relativelty inactive at the back.

Any replies are appreciated!

Hi,

When you say you clean out your filter every 3 months what do you mean? A quick run down in old tank water at water changes should do it.

Nitrates at 30ppm doesn't sound particularly high but if it was directly after a water change then that could be misleading. Do you vac your gravel? Could be nasty's lurking there.

As far as the fish go, it doesn't sound like fin rot, sounds more like scrapping fish and with a rainbow shark involved involved, sounds even more likely.

keep and eye on it and up the frequency of water changes. HTH.

When i clean my filter I disconnect it, open it up, and rinse everything with tank water. I also change the white filter pad.

Yes I do vac my gravel, but its very hard to get to most of the gravel coz of plants, so I would say only about 40% of the gravel is accessable.

Thanks for the reply.
