I have been feeding algae wafers and veggie wafers or sinking sticks for many years. I used to use the Hikari Algae wafers until they degraded them. I am always looking for a spirulina food which had a decent spirulina content. Most of them are 15% or less and the rest are fillers etc. and I have mostly stopped buying them.
I have also been shopping on the Jehmco site for about 15 years now. One of the things I get from them are shipping bags, I needed to do an order as I was running low on a few sizes. I am always interested in new foods and I have been buying a lot of my frozen foods from them over the years. So after I got done making up my specific bag kist I decided to take a look at their foods to see if I could find anything new. I am not sure how long they have had these two foods listed on the site but I found them today and was very excited.
At the bottom of the food page they had two item I had never seen. The first really wowed me. It was for "SPIRULINA TABLETS (Concentrated)" The only food ingredient listed was spirulina. Everything else listed fell into the following categories" Vitamins, Minerals, Fatty Acids and Pigments. There were no fillers. I had to get some of this stuff. It was offered in 1/4 pound, 1 and 2 pound sizes. Below the Spirulina Tablets they also listed Sinking Algae Discs described as :A high Spirulina content wafer. Great for herbivorous bottom feeding fish such as plecos and other Catfish." but with no ingredients.
So I decided to grab or the 1/4 pint spirulina tablets and I asked them about the ingredients in the algae wafers, Those were only offered in 1 or 2 pound sizes. So, I figured to stick with just the Tablets for this order. When I asked for the two 1/4 pounds I was told they were out of stock and were becoming hard to find. So I ended up order a pound of the Algae wafers as they read the ingrediednt to me and Spirulina was the first one on the list and then a few different algaes. I also asked them to email me if they got the Spirulina Tablets back in stock.
At the club meeting last Friday I made up three bags which contained a small jar (sold as one ounce jars but this was for liquid ounces). I put 4 different sample into each bag. There were three sticks- shrimp, mussel and veggie and then two softgrans (available in several different smaller size pieces) which included Mussel and Artenia. So I figure I can sell maybe 1/2 of the algae wafers in either 4 x 2 ounce or 2 x 4 ounce portions for folks to try. Since it is an auction I cannot put a price on the samples. But is is not all that important to me and I will likeky make whatever size I decide to offer a donation to the club.
My club takes 20% of of the winning bid at most meetings, but at least twice a year they do a 100% to the seller auction. I buy most of my fish at the club auctions. We have very experienced members breeding a variety of species and they are usually healthy and in excellent condition. The club also runs a public auction every January, Finally, several times a year they have pizza sent in for the meeting and also underwrite an X-mas dinner meeting every Dec.So, I feel it is important for me to help support the club and have recently begun donating more items. I also always buy at least $20 worth of tickets in the 50/50 raffle where 1/2 the ticket sales go to a winner and the other 1/2 goes to the club. If I ever win I plan to donate my half to the club.
I made this post for two reasons. The first was to inform other members here about the two Spirulina based foods. The secod was to tout, one more time, the benefits of being in a club if there is one anywhere near to where you live.
