What do you guys/gals think about me hooking up one of my eheim pro II 2028's to my 29 gallon to start getting the bacterial colony in the filter? I don't know if it would be to powerful? Thinking that maybe it would be. It has a spray bar where the water comes back out so I could aim it at the surface. Please let me know what you think!!! Thank you very much! :)

---edit----

I'm just trying to get my 125 gallon cycled ASAP since I'm expecting 12 new fish to come in the mail soon. Then I wouldn't have to overcrowd them in the 29 gallon for very long.

I am not a pro but as far as I understand it, you wouldn't really benefit from doing this, there isn't much bacteria in the water column. Personally I think your best bet is to put some of the media from the filter in the 29 in to the 2028. You could also try adding the Bio Spira to speed the process along.

As far as flow rate goes I think the 2028 is only ~270gph which is what my 304 is rated and I had that on a 29 with out a spraybar and the current wasn't that bad.

wslinky's right. There aint much (if any) beneficial bacteria free-floating in the water. The best way is to put some media from your mature filter into the filter thats running on the tank you want cycled.

I was thinking that the bacteria could start growing in the canister filter and I'd have some established from that. Then when I quickly move it to the 125 tank, there would already be some bacteria and I could go ahead and throw a couple fish in the 125, keep monitoring the water, then if it seems alright, add a few more fish and slowly empty my fish from my 29 fish tank into the 125. I guess I may not have explained what I was trying to do very well. i could also put a small established sponge filter into the 125 to futher help things. My my main filter on the 29 is a HOB whisper power filter 30. I guess I could throw a little media in there, however, I'm concerned with blocking the water flow. There wouldn't be much room to do so. What do you guys/gals think?

I don't mean throw it on the tank and move it quickly. Just pointing out that I read that the flow needs to be constant or bacteria may start dieing. I would move it quickly from one tank to the other when I do move it.

How does bacteria start growing in other places if there's not much in the water? I guess I'm slightly confused now!!  I think I'll go reading now.

To make it simple:

Take the sponge or the carbon stage from your old filter, and put it in the new filter. Let it run for 1 day, test water, if water tests good then you can put the fish in.

Let me state what I understand and see if I am correct...

Currently you have the 29 setup, and NO water in the 125. So you want to start 1 of the filters for the 125 on the 29 until you have water in the 125. Then move the filter to the 125.

If that is correct then yes it would work.

You could also just add water to the 125 with some ammonia and let it start cycling with both filter ( I think you said you were going to have 2 in your other thread) with some of the media from the HOB in them. You would then need to do a water change when the fish get in and monitor the NO2 and NH3 till the tank can finish cycling.

I hope that makes sense...

yes, I'll have two eheim pro II 2028's going on the 125. And I'd be starting one on the 29 to jump start the bacterial colonization for the 125. Sorry, it's kinda confusing.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out a way to cycle faster so I don't end up w/14 little fishies in the 29 for very long. They are only about an 1" or 2 long, long but Ferris had suggested to me only to keep 8 in there. I bought the fish off the internet and paid the same shipping whether or not I got 3, 6, 9, or 12 fish. So I got 12.

What you stated makes sense. I'll try it and see how it goes. Thanks everyone. It's been a LOOOOOONNNNGGGGG time since I had to cycle a tank!

I hooked up one of my eheims to my 29 gallon tank. It's the first canister filter I've ever had. I CANNOT believe how quiet it is. My air pump thing is noiser than the filter. I expected there would be more noise with it being so big and all (compared to the HOB filters). (Yes, it's working....I checked *twice* to make sure...LOL). I ended up aiming the spray bar at the wall that it's suctioned to. I have the HOB on the left side of the tank and a huge air stone( about 5.5" or 14 cm) on the right. With the addition of the eheim, I felt like the water swirled too much!

Thanks for all the advice everyone!! :D
