 Any idea of what a normal percentage of unfertilized eggs would be on first time spawners? I thought it would be about 50% while they were spawning but in looking at the nest and eggs, I think it's even higher. You can see the difference between the fertil eggs and those that aren't now and there appears to be about 50 good eggs out of approximately 200 dropped. It's currently raining white eggs from the nest and he's busy putting them back.

i just had my first spawn and i had very few unfertilized so it must very depening on the skill of the two ;) but dont take my word for it wait for someone like caution src or bettamomma they know wut their talkin about B)

:) You can see the development of the tails inside the eggs now. It won't be much longer before they hatch. Poor male puts three eggs back and ten float off to the bottom.

Awww bless him. Its such a tough time for him right now but his job will be done soon and he can have a good meal of bloodworms when you take him out :D

I had quite a few eggs in my spawn but I had gravel in the bottom of the tank as it wasn't planned and I lost a load of eggs down there. I got around 25 hatch but only 20 have made it to 3 months old.

-_- Let me say he's working!! He makes a trip to the bottom and back every 20 seconds. I timed him last night. He's picking them up but unfortunately doesn't realize just blowing them in the general direction of the nest is not keeping them in the nest. He gets about an inch to an inch and a half under the nest and pops them up. They then bounce off and instead of the three he started with there's about 15 bodies raining down. At this point he's put the same group back so many times they are dead. There's a good group of 13 in the back of the cup now that looks good if he doesn't hit that area. They are clinging to the cup and manage to get back when dislodged. He's really very good and not excitable - thank goodness - as apparently the cat made a visit to the tank sometime in the middle of the night and moved the cover off.

One of my first spawns years ago had gravel in the tank. To add insult to injury the male decided they made a better snack than babies.
