My little Penny is ill. :( He has mouth fungus. No other member of the community has any signs of illness at all and this came on rather unexpectedly. The tank is mature and there's been no added fish at all in recent times.
I treated with an anti-fungal I had in earlier this afternoon and it doesn't look quite so bad but he looks truly ill. Have seperated him into a breeders net as the quarantine tank is in use. Is there anythingelse I can do? :/
Hugs,
P.

Whats your location and what is the name of the med, please.

I'm in Cambridge, UK and the med is...damnit this is embarrassing. It was the last of one I hadn't used in a while. Not one I used much but was for fungal infection. I've thrown away the empty bottle and packaging. Sorry. :*)
I was due to do my weekly water change today but since I medicated thought I'd do a big one tomorrow instead and give him some stress free space. It was a single dose med only to be repeated if preceeded by a 50% water change.
Hugs,
P.

I would try a bacteria med, as in the uk for columnaris you have to use a fungus med, with a bacteria med, anti internal bacteria med by interpet.

I shall go pick up the appropriate meds tomorrow morning. Do a water change and add the meds he needs. He's quiet in the net and it's nice and dark in there so he can rest and not have other fish darting around him. It came on so suddenly. He was his normal bright sparky self a few days ago but I've been distracted with one of my cats being rather ill (temp of 105 poor girl) so haven't been as vigilant as I normally am. He is one of my very first and oldest fish and naturally I am rather attached to him. Not that he is old!
Ah jeez I'm babbling, sorry.
Hugs,
P.

Good luck, hope the cat and the fish get well soon.

Wilder is right about getting an anti-bacterial med but most 'anti-fungus' meds are actualy anti-bacterial anyway. 'Mouth fungus' is typicaly Flexibacter columnaris or Aeromonas sp. (which also cause finrot and body 'fungus') and, in the UK, I've found Interpet's Anti Fungus & Finrot (treatment number 8) to be quite effective. Like the treatment you say you used, it is a single-dosage treatment. Having said that, a large water change after every treatment is very important as you have to make sure water quality remains excellent. This particular med. doesn't usualy interfere with biological filtration but it can, so monitor ammonia/nitrIte carefuly. The only other thing I'd suggest is trying to find a cycled tank to isolate the fish into as soon as possible. Then you can also dose lightly with aquarium salt and make sure you lower the temperature of the tank (gradualy) to just under 75-76 deg F. The lower you can get it (without compromising the fish' own immune system), the worse off the bacteria will be. Around 74 is probably the lowest you could go with the gourami without risking making it weaker. The thing is, it would be stressful to do this in a community tank and that might cause the other fish to catch it too. You'll find lowering the temp. makes a huge difference though so do it as soon as you can. Is the gourami still eating? Frozen foods and other high-quality foods will help it recover.

Send my regards to your cat ;) I hope she gets well soon.

Thanks so much for your help guys. Sadly Penny died late last night. The fungus med I used had made alot of the fungus go but it was too little too late, so it would seem. :-( I will miss him a great deal as he was a favourite of mine and of my daughters. :rip:
To make matters worse I was out for the greater part of today and when I came home one of the danios had died, but not due to any fungus. It looked as though someone had attacked it. :S Seems highly unlikely (See 15g in siggy). Checked water params immediately which are spot on, but did a large water change and added some melafix for the others. No other fish is showing any signs whatsoever of stress or illness. I'm seriously confused and upset by this.
Telita is much better thank you. She returned to the vet for another injection this morning and has a course of tablets to take but her temp has stayed down and she is almost her old bouncy self again. Thank heavens for small mercies. :)
Hugs,
P.
