I got a new 5.5 gallon tank set up a few days ago, with a male betta and an african dwarf frog. I was wondering if it would be too overstocked if I added a female betta to the tank. I've heard that male bettas will attack the female after breeding; is this true, and if so, is it dangerous to the female?

well, i really wouldn't keep a male and female betta together unless you want to breed them. The male will attack the female after breeding, and before breeding. If hte female's not ready to breed, she'll be seen as an invader to the male and will be attacked.

 so the female would probably be in danger if you just keep her in the male's tank.

If you didn't cycle the tank before adding the fish and ADF, wait a couple weeks for the bacteria to establish, and then perhaps add one or two more ADFs.

I cycled the tank's filter media; not as good as a complete cycle but good enough. It has a box filter filled with pillow stuffing ($2 for a lifetime supply). Mabye a female would be a bad idea. I'm going to go with wild guppies instead.

Once the tank is fully cycled, you might be able to put in a male and female separated by a tank divider thingy. That way you could watch them flare at each other, without your girl getting all beat up.

Im not really sure maybe someone else can back me up but i read on another post simalar to this one that guppies and male bettas are a no no

I believe it is because the bettas see the guppies fins and nip them too.

just trying to help.

I've had bad luck with bettas and guppies. The betta always tries to pick a fight, or else they guppies nip at the betta's tail. Not much fun for either. Platies don't seem to be so much of a problem though.

i used 2 keep my yellow guppy w/my betta. they never fought at all. nor did they nip eachother. i think its the fancey ones that are a no, no.
