hi all,

I have 3 swordtails ( 1 male, 2 female) in my 125l with 5 danios and 1 bristlenose. I read last night in practical fishkeeping that swortails can be agressive? is this right? i've not seen this, my male was interested in the pleco for a bit, but gets either ignored or chased off. apart from reversing at high speed at the females, he seems quite dosile.

also, i was going to add 2 x dwarf gouramis, is this ok?

many thanks

Dave

hi,
i also read that swordtails can be,i think its usually between males though so my fish book says, yours seems fine with his women so you should be ok with the dwarfs, were you thinking of a male and a female , as ive read that 2 males will fight for terrortory. i have one male and he likes to keep my pink kissing gourami in check, hth donna :)

Male swords are notoriously horny fish. Mine will try to spawn with anything that they think might possible respond. I would not call them agressive as much as sexually poseessed.

that's funny!

yeah - would get 1 male, 1 female. don't see why the swordtail should have all the fun.

Male Swordtails can be extremely aggressive to other males. Some of them will be fine with other males though, so it depends on the fish. That would be my guess as to what the book was talking about.

You do get the occasional just plain aggressive male though. One of mine terrorized a whole tank, but he was the only Swordtail I've had like that in over 8 years. :)
