what is the number of females that can be safely kept together. Is there a safe limit minimum or maximum....just curious

Many people say 6 or more if you are a first timer with females. I've known people keep trios and groups of four without incident, but the fewer fish the higher the risk of fights.

6 is a safe minimum.

I have kept 3 togther fine, but its the same with males as it all depends on the temprement of the individual fishy!!
IMO from experence odd numbers work better than even numbers... 5 or 7 are nice!!

I put six together and it was horrible. Three of them ripped each other to shreds in less than one evening. I took those three out and the three that were left went after each other. It was a huge mistake and unless you have a back-up plan if the females don't get along (or the sorority doesn't work out), it doesn't seem like it's worth the risk of letting the fish harm each other.

I cannot say from experience. The ones I brought home each came from individual cups and they all looked so different from one another (and came from two seperate LSFs) that I'm positive they were not related. Seems that if you did find six healthy looking ones/sisters from the same tank, they possibly would be less likely to go completely bonkers. They'll still need to establish a pecking order, IMO, so some bickering will go on.

FWIW, I was only able to keep two of the females. One is now in a 10-gallon and the other in a 3-gallon. That is why I was saying be sure to have a back-up plan. I didn't have one and now realize it was horribly irresponsible of me not to have thought it all through.

Then surely you could watch them in that tank for a while and see how things go............?
