As most of you know i lost many fish over the Christmas holidays. I firmly beleive this was my own fault and the initial mistake led to a chain reaction tht wiped out most of my tank.

For those of you out there that believe tangs can be kept in tanks under 100 gallons please read this and learn from my mistake.

I had (and still have) an emperor tang. the entire tank was thriving as can be seen in the photo below.

I knew that my large tank was arriving in just a few weeks so in my eagerness i took the chance get the next fish on my list... An Achilles tang, i knew full well that adding 2 tangs was risky in this size of tank but as both were from different tang families i felt there would be a chance of it working out.

Wrong.. war broke out for 3 solid days with my new Achilles taking a real beating. it started out as a shining healthy example but got badly shredded by the endless battles with their sharp scalpals.

After 3 days of warfare, i was in fact correct in my analogy that these tang could get along as both now swam side by side after getting their pecking order sorted out. Sadly it was too late and this was the start of the end of my reef tank as i knew it.
This was the tang once the fighting had settled down. The marks shown are all that can be via the camera but alas they were far worse. the face mark is a deep scar across its cheek that narrowly missed its eye.

Even theough things were now calm in the tank the Achilles was under enormous stress and whitespot hit with abundance a ll over it in the next 3 days that followed. No other fish at this time showed signs of illness.

Sadly i lost the Achilles after 6 days in my tank through the stress levels of being kept in the wrong conditions.
This was taken the day before it died. Hard to beleive its the very same fish

The tank appeared fine and no other ilness was apparant. There was a Powder brown Tang in superb condition for sale. I thought that now my emperor was used to a tang in the same tank as it, perhaps there would not be much fighting. I got the tang and placed iti n the tank the very day after i lost the Achilles.
I was right! After a brief altercation to establish who was boss, they both settleed down nicely and things seemd to be looking good.
Here is the Powder Brown.

This was a huge mistake in all honesty. THe whitespot from the Achilles was still in the tank and even though my other fish were healthy to ward off this parasite, the new addition sucum to it very quickly and became infested with it. I reacted accordingly, switching on the UV.. No effect. Adding garlic to the food, no effect. By now the parasite had managed to infect other fish and they were all slowly weakening to it.

By the time i reluctantly decided to use medication it was already too late for many of the tanks inhabitants.

Purple Firefish :rip:
(no at hand)

After medication, i did manage to save the other fish...
Dusky Wrasse
(never seemed effected)

Emperor Tang
Was looking very ill but now looks like its very healthy again

Female Clown
(More about her later)

Female Anthias (now turning male)
Looks very healthy

Algae Blenny
(Never effected)

Asfur Angel
Still recovering but eating well. (still looks poor though)

Marine Beta
(never seemd effected)

6 Line wrasse
(never effected. I actually dont think wrasses are effected by ich though improbably wrong)

So with these fish now on the road to recovery i have actually started to add more. The BLue ring... not by choice but its still here and looks ok (though still not feeding.. i guess it ust be though)

Cleaner wrasse
Added during the ich phase to help with the parasite. (again never effected)

And a few mor fish since then...

I purchased a small male clown but he sadly died last by being sucked into a powerhead :rip:

I have a Bi colour angel but its vanshed.. i have checked all over and there is no sign of him :-(

And today, sadly .....
My beautiful female Clown, she had battled through all the problems i had, I came in from work this morning to find her dead inside the same powerhead that took her new husband the night before  :rip:

Now admittedly, not all of these deaths were attirubuted to Whitespot but i made this post so that people can see how adding a single fish that is not right for your tank can upset and snowball out of proportion doing far more damage over many weeks or months.

Its enough to make even the most devoted hobbiest question their motivation for keeping these wonderful creatures.
I have lost so much stock recently its simply heartbreaking to see fish that have grown up in the tank devlope their own personalities etc. They do not have much awareness of your presence other than feeding times but they are totally reliant on your love, your skill and devotion to them. The desisions you make directly impact their very lives so please, please, please remember this before making purcahses or decsions that might cause such disasters as i have endured here.

(And this doesnt even cover the impact its made on all my corals... these are also dying .. or at least changing vastly).

Thats a very sad story, so many lovely fish, I really liked your moth fish :-(

I have white spot in my tank at the moment and am on my second course of octozin. My remaining clown (the other died on the first day of infection) seems strong and is eating, but has spots still, my six line had spots (yes I can verify they do get it) but seems fine now.

Sure your tank will get back to the wonderful condition it was in, in no time.

Navarre:

Sounds like a rough time. That's a lot of loss.

FWIW I'd reconsider the approach to stocking generally, not just the multiple tang issue. There is more to it than inches of fish per gallon. Numbers of individuals also matters, and you had a lot of fish in that 100. Just my take on things. Doesn't make all the loss any easier, I know.

I'm upgrading to a 150 with at least as much volume in fuge and sump this summer, and am holding off on replacing my lawnmower blenny and my pygmy angel, and not adding any other fish, until then. Much as I'd like an Achilles, even 150 won't be enough with an Atlantic Blue already in there. I MAY add a sailfin. We'll see.

i knew of your loses before in another post but when you see pics of them it brings a tear to my eye so many lovely fish, how is your bluering has he not fed since you got him its been 2 to 3 weeks now hasent it :/

I'm sorry to hear that navarre, never a pleasant experience losing a fish, let alone a whole tank full.

How long a gap between the achilles dying and the addition of the powder brown was there and did you quarantine it first? I suspect this may be the more major cause of the degrading of your tank than anything else.

I always allow a few weeks for any ich levels to reduce before adding any new fish as sometimes the fish may still be carrying it but not showing symptoms due to being healthy from what I've found through experience and research. Placing any new additions into quarentine during this "resting" period also helps as you can condition the fish (and therefore it's immune system) while making sure they aren't going to place any more pathogens into your tank nor catch whatever is already there.

Thanks for the kind comments everyone, it really helps when you get these "dark" days. Dragonscales, with hindsight you are right, i personally dont quarentine as i dont have another tank but i would usually make sure the tank was settled ect. On this occasion i used poor judgemet as i added the powder brown the very next day. My reasoning was that the emperor tang was now used to the presence of a naso type body in the same territory, if i was to wait then i might get the same fighting again... if i added it right away then perhaps the emperor would accept it. so within 12 hours the new tang was added.... BIG Mistake people.. never try this as its a recipy for disaster.

Ostrow, you are indeed correct, my stocking level was high but until then i had carefully picked fish that were well compatible, the biolevels handled it easily and the territory of these fish were never inopposition. My stupidity was the eagerness of the new tank and foolishness in thinking that i could get away with housing these extra fish temporarily until the new tank arrives... wrong.. very wrong

If this post helps just one person realise the dangers in stocking peramteres and just how quickly a tank can crash taking everything with it then this post was worth while.

Very sorry that happen to my tank when i got my coral beauty angel. the hole tank got infested with ich. and i'm just know starting to get control of it. very hard to loose those many fish. then you start second thought on why you went into this hobby. you even thinking about quitting. but then you come to thinking that you would miss the fish way to much. so you just hold on and keep on going.

And may your fish rest in peace. :byebye: :rip:

That sucks, I hate it when I kill fish (over the past years I've gotten atyleast 50 freshwater fish, not inclueding feeders, which have died of one thing or another, 90% of the time my fault, and now only have 5 left to my name (plus some fry and two that I was given)), Thats why I'm going to get a complete set up going in a perminent home before I start any major SW (tempted to get a pair of clowns alone in a 5 gallon though)

EDIT: Said 5 meant 15, :rip: Lost fishies

Aww, Im sorry to hear that nav :( But, like someone once told me, learn from your errors, and other's. I did learn a thing or two from your post, and thank you. (though my reef tank is about completed for now.)

But, may your fish rest in peace, along with the many I've lost as well.

Nav, Sorry for your loss. Man that was rough. Thanks for sharing the errors of your ways. It was good for me to read and see. This story will definitely stick.. So many often keep personal mistakes to themselves for fear of ridicule and jugdement.

Big Man....thanks

Nav i found some info you might be interested in about your angel not feeding, apparently when there in a captive tank they dont know how to feed I.E you put some food in and he doesent know what it is, ive read the trick is to get an elastic band and some food and just attache it to the rock that way it seems more natural for they fish. If you have tried it never mind if you havent let me know how you get on :)

Navvarre, i know how u feel. I once lost a tremendous amount of fish. But mine was for a different reason to yours.

I started my fish keeping hobbies four years ago, and through the ill advice of a very bad fish store, i did not keep my firt salt water fish in the right conditions. After about a dozen or more fish, i spoke to another dealer, and found the right advice. i gave up soon after, because i felt terrible. And started to keep tropicals, and still am! :)

Now i am older, and able minded, i plan too have many more aquaria. I have done my research and am aiming for a nother tropical tank before i delve into marines.

I love your tank pics, they are the first time i have eva seen them, and although your experince was tragic, it will act as a lesson for many.

Sorry for your loss once again, but im sure all hope is not lost for your passion of fishkeeping.

Benny.
