In my breeding tank my male built a small nest. But now he is jumpy, not normal jumping, not weird jumping, I mean JUMPY. He jump completely out of the water when I walk up to the tank. He raced across it and jumped again! Something is not right here. Does anyone know what this could be?

Hi There

Sounds like the water quality is bad - normally they will try to escape it if it is very poor. Dont think he would have built a nest if the water quality was poor though. If you once had females in sight but separated by a divider he could be trying to jump the water to 'find them'. The only other reason for jumping would be parasites irritating him. You would have noticed white spot but it could be gill parasites or slime disease/velvet. Hope this is some help

ya a female is in there waiting for him to build a bigger nest. I don't think its the water though. But maybe it is  I think he is jumpy waiting for me to release the female. She seems a little jumpy her self but thats most likely because she is in a small vase in the 15 gallon waiting for him to build a bubble nest that she can have eggs in.

if it is a new tank he could be stressed because he is in unfamiliar area. Check your water, if thats fine, then it may be he is stressed out. I had one male that would do the same thing and would never breed, he hated to leave his home.

what are your water params? Did you add anything to the tank water before adding the bettas? It sounds to me like the water quality might be poor, like leec said.

Maybe not "poor", but just maybe something that they're not used to. I.E. adding IAL extract or Spawn-Aide or something of that sort.
