Last night something strange happened - well, I say "strange" - just something I've never seen before.

I have a tank with two parent short-bodied pink convicts, along with 9 x 1inch fry.

Well, all the convicts were swimming merrily around in their tank (parents and 9 fry) and as I walked towards their tank to feed them they suddenly - in the blink of an eye - froze where they were, on the spot - all of them completely stopped swimming at the same time, as if someone had pressed a pause button on the TV LOL to freeze screen.

I stared at them like that for a while and they stared back - but not moving at all, apart from their eyes - we must have stared at each other for a good 30 seconds like that. I even waved my hand in front of the tank to see if it would make any of them move but they didn't and it freaked me out LOL

It's like they were playing "musical statues" - you know, that game kids play at parties where they dance around until someone turns the music off and they have to stand still in exactly the pose they were in - well that's what it looked like. Honestly, in all this time of keeping fish I've never witnessed anything like it!!

Found it kind of spooky! Anyone else ever seen that happen in their tanks?

Yep! It scared the crap out of me. All of my cichlids in their big tank froze. It happened about 2months ago. Our tnak is within eye site of the front door and whenever i walk through it they all get excited and dance around and splash about, However..when i walked through the door this day i had on my winter clothes. Beanie, scarf, massive jacket and they all put their angry fins out, flashed colour and froze for a good minute! It wasnt untill i went to the cupboard to get them food that they realised who i was lol.

WEIRD!

They are such amusing and spontaneous creatures :D

Hello you LOL !!

Wow - isn't that strange that yours have done it too? I wonder why they do it? And what I don't understand is how they ALL know to do it at the same time!

Maybe it's some kind of shock reaction? That's quite funny that you shocked them with your winter outfit - I never thought that fish might recognise us. Hmmm... just trying to think back...was I wearing anything outrageously different last night LOL

Erm, nope - just the usual lilac dressing gown at that time of the evening...

Could be that I'd taken my make-up off and frightened the pants off 'em LOL

ps - forgot to add that they definitely looked like they were giving me the "evil eye" treatment. Was a bit scared to open the lid to feed them - I was thinking OMG they are going to jump out and attack me!

Stange  , as last night I entered the room with my planted tank, stocked with 25 Neons, 14 Rasboras, Corys, Silver Sharks, Shrimps, Dwarf Pencilfish, Cherry Barbs etc... and I cound't see a fish in sight (have always seen them swimming around..... ) Was very creepy, but within 5mins everything was back to normal.
