I was feeding the fish the other day when I noticed something stuck near the top of the tank. It was brown/grey on the top with a lighter underside, creamy couloured. It was about 2.5cm long, 3-4mm wide and looked bit slimey. It appeared to have no visible markings except a small circle at one end on its underside, about 2mm diameter. It did not move when I fished it out and I flushed it down the toilet.

Does anybody know what this could be? Some type of worm/leech? and is it a problem? I have never seen anything like it in the year I have had my tank running.

I'm not having a go (and I don't mean to hijack the thread), but is flushing unknown stuff down the toilet the best way to dispose of it? I'm guessing it may be a danger to the ecosystem at some point maybe, if not killed off?

Well I dont really think that its a danger because many people and things can have access to the drainage pipes. Some pipes contain rats that may have a rabies. So its not something to worry about...

Sounds like it was a leech to me ;)

It probably would have been better to kill it rather than flushing it... but I'll let you off because they give me the heebie jeebies! I've found a whole pile of them in an aquatic plant pot before and I thought I was going to puke...

haha. Well a leech. I never seen a leech except on Fear Factor. Ive seen a giant slug before when I went camping it was sitting on a rock it was as a big as my hand except taller...Heres a pic so You can have the heebie jeebies one more time:
