One of my 3 1/2" bamboo shrimp has vanished overnight! Whats more strange is that the only things bigger than the shrimp in the tank are a 4" severum, a 6" gibbicep and a 6" fire eel. Don't think it was the eel as his mouth isnt big enough yet as hes still pretty small. can only think it was the severum, or a mass tiger barb attack! That was an expensive meal for some fish or other, just hope he tasted good

Dont be fooled by the eel, a 6" fire eel is more than capable of swallowing a 3 1/2" shrimp. The severum also would be capable of eating the shrimp so all in all it was doomed from the start.

do you have anything the shrimp could hide under?

I bought a blue crayfish, it was about 3 inches long. It disappeared for 4 days. I gave up and assumed it had been eaten. well, lo and behold, 4 days later there it was...healthy as all heck and about 1/2 " bigger. It had dug out the gravel under a piece of wood, closed itself in and shed it carapace.

lift up every thing in the tank and look under it

I hope i'm right

:dunno:

seriously, you reckon the eel would have been able to take him out? he generally struggles with any more than 1/2 a cube of bloodworms at a time, and the shrimps body was twice his thickness. I know that as he grows he may become more of a threat but thought he'd struggle at the moment. but I'm still new to eels, so not sure what they're capable of really.

I have one bamboo shrimp left now. have to see how long he lasts; the only other options for him are a red-eye/dwarf puffer tank or, if he will tolerate brackish a figure 8/gsp tank so doubt if he'd be any safer elsewhere....

Eels have much larger mouths than many people realise, the skin at the sides of the jaws is very elastic and allows the eel to open its mouth much wider than expected and engulf quite large prey.

ok, i'll keep an eye out for a disappearing #2 bamboo shrimp and a lumpy eel :S
