I'm still trying to figure out exactly what I;d like in my tank when the time comes. One thing that has struck me in the 5 LFS I've been to is that there were probably only 4 of the same fish in each store as there is so much variety!

The tank is a Roma 240l with dimensions of 120cm (W) x 40cm (D) x 55cm (H).

Some may have noticed that I really really want some Gold laser Corys and while I know 6 is an ideal minimum, 10 is better still. With a tank of this size how many different kinds of Corys might I be able to drop in in multiples of 8-10? Would I only be able to have one type or might I get away with 2 or 3 different varieties and how are Corys with being all male/female?

I've not decided which kind of plec(s) I might like yet however the Bristlenose I saw the other day looked beautiful as have a few others I've seen. I know they tend to be a bit filter heavy but what I cant seem to find is anything that says if they prefer having a few of the same species to chat to or if they are fine being the sole plec in the village.

Now I know Neon Tetras are very popular, but I can;t help much preferring the Cardinals. I see that they should also be in a minimum of 6 but ideally more and again with a large tank I can afford the space to have 10-15+. Similarly to the Corys, in a tank of that size am I going to be able to squeeze in another variety?

bristlenoses are mildly territorial so absolutely fine on their own

(I have two males in a tank of your dimensions but they do squabble a bit; I wouldn't want the tank to be any smaller)

otherwise a lovely fish and perfectly peaceful with anything else

if you do go for cories don't forget the sandy substrate; it really makes a big difference to the wellbeing of these fish (bristlenoses don't care either way)

I would go for just one species of cory + the bristlie, or just the one species of cory

you should be able to find room for two shoals of tetras or similar on top of that- or a large shoal and a centrepiece fish (something like a banded gourami)

Thanks for that. I do already have some sand to go in so my substrate is Cory friendly. It's a bit of a shame that I'd only have room for one kind of Cory as there are so many nice varieties but if that's the way it is then CW010 it will be!
