hi ive decided to start growing some live plants in my aquariums and i have several questions

#1
i dont get what a rhizome is
and i dont get the definitions on wikipedia or dictionary.com
something about horizontal.. or perpendicular line where something grows
also on ebay it says 5 rhizomes of java fern [.......what?!!11]

#2
also, wood i think thats a plant right..
do different types of wood do something different or have special properties or something?
like african driftwood malaysian driftwood bogwood.. etc.
i just want one to attach some plants to & for my pleco
[ive heard to only get bogwood because it doesnt decay
on the contrary
ive also heard plecos like driftwood? but some driftwood hurts? hmmm??!]
PS is Aquawood [at petsmart/petco] = driftwood?

#3
Lastly, where do you get slate? do local stores sell it? i dont really want to buy it online because the shipping is a bit really high for so little pieces and i kind of want to pick out the shapes [to attach plants]

Yeah  <- me
Help is appreciated a LOT
Thanks!1

Only answer I have for you is yes you can buy slate at the petstore but its usually sold by the pound and can be pretty expensive. I have a pond at my work which had slate around it and I gathered some there boiled it good and it does a nice job and the best part was it was free. :good:

1. I'm sure something else will explain it better, but the rhizome is where the leaves and roots meets. 5 rhizomes = 5 plants.

2. Different wood have different appearances and weight, as long as they're aquarium-safe, I doubt they have a lot of differing properties.

3. You can buy slate at your LFS. Runs around $1-2 a pound.

oh hahaha Thanks!!1 :D
1 rhiz = 1 plant got it!
haha lucky. maybe i will go scavenger hunting before i visit my LFs this weekend
:)

rhizome is also refering to the 'shoot' of some plants like anubias, java fern, ... which the rhizomes for these plants is not recommended to be buried in gravel as it will be rotten.
