hi,

i have a 215L tank, plastic plants, black gravel and a few hidey holes etc. PH is 6.4 - 6.8, ammonia is fine as is nitrates etc.

Currently stock - 2 common plec - 17 neon tetras - 6 rummynose tetras - 6 hockey tetras - 1 rainbow shark - 2 honey gouramis - 4 mickey mouse platys -

Since adding the 4 platys the 2 gouramis have started hiding all the time and sitting on the floor level - previously out the front taking centre stage! Is there a reason for this? Can i do something to change it?(they seemed quite happy and forward before) - is it the platys or is something else wrong for them?

I am happy with the middle of tank (most of the time) the top is dead though - can you suggest what i can put in-

my kids (including hubby) want a couple of fish with character that they can name that will fit into our home - any suggestion please. We would prefer not to have any more shooling type fish

Can you also suggest somewhere on line that we can buy fish as we only have a local garden and a really dirty looking fish shop centre near us.

Thanks for all help in advance
Tracy xx

What water testing kit are you using?

Have the gouramis just started acting funny since the platies were added?

What filtration are you using?

Another thing, you will need to rehome the 2 common plecs, the tank isnt anywhere near big enough for one let alone 2 as they grow upto 18/20 inches long.

Hi,
yes they were fine until about 8 hours after they wereadded - they seemed to have a little turf war type thing and they have seemed strange since then if that makes sense.

The tank has in built filtration? I think - bit of a novice - have a aqua one ar 980 and was just told to add a heater.

The shop recommend 2 common plec as the very first fish for the size of tank? Should i rehome just now or wait till they are bigger they are currently about 2 inches? Where do i advertise them?

Testing kits i use - Nutrafin test (2/3 weekly) & Test 6 in 1 tetra testing kit

Thanks for your help - i am a total novice here

How long has your tank been running? is it cycled? and how did you cycle it?

The testing kit you are using, is it a liquid test kit? or the paper test strips? If its the test strips then they are next to useless and dont give accurate readings so it would be hard to verify if you have any problems with water issues.

The common plecs will be ok for a short while if the are only 2" at the moment but will need rehoming as they grow bigger. The only prob you may find with the plecs is that if you do have water issues, they wont help as they are large waste producers. If you decide to rehome them you can advertise them on here, there is a classified section, or most lfs will take them off you, some may even give you store credit for them.

To be honest I wouldnt take advice from your lfs, you will be much better from now on asking advice on here as most lfs advice isnt very reliable. Did they ask the size of your tank when selling you the 2 common plecs? they must have known how large they grow.

Heres a pic of a common plec and he isnt even that big compared to how big they can get: Common plec

Where abouts do you live? some members may be able to recommend good fish stores near your area.

Andy

the plecs do get big i have three 1 gibbiceps @ 12" 1 common @ 13" and another gibby @ 6" not all in the same tank though but yours should be fine for quite a while yet, the smallest gibby got bought @ 1.5" 18months ago so they are fairly slow growing like whats been siad though you will need to rehome these @ about 6" max i think

how about a yoyo loach or something

if your looking for a good fish than look no further than the zebra danio :good:
