hi, i have 38ltr tank and its half full, i have moved my fry so it just houses mts at the mo. can they live in coldwater? as it will cost alot of electricity to keep the heater going. also can they go in a tank that is unfiltered as that will also hoover up electricity. i could do a water change every 2 or 3 days and replace with warmer water than normal (only 2 or 3 degrees!) so that will keep the water clean and also a little warm for a day or so. i just need some opinions and help on this. im breeding them so eventually when i have enough i can get a botia of some description. and have a constant supply of food. Thanks all.

They can live in cooler temperatures, but breed significantly slower at below 18* celcius...I found a paper on their temperature tolerance through google scholar a while ago...but now I cant find it, you should have a look :).
If I remember rightly, it basically said the best temperature for them to breed was 30* celcius, one or two degrees above would slowly kill them, where as below it made them breed slower.

Just breed them in your main tank, if you get a big enough population going and feed your Botia proper food too, they should be able to breed fast enough. I have two yo-yo loaches and a huge population of MTS in my main tank. It's fun to watch them at work tackling the snails.

Btw, you seem to ask nearly all your questions in tropical discussion, try the specific areas. For example, this should probably have gone in the 'Invertebrates, Amphibians & Aquatic Reptiles Forum', and your hardware questions could have gone in the hardware section.

It's no big deal, it just helps people who have similar questions in the future to find answers, that's why there is different sections :).

They will live in cold water but slow down and often sleep when it is really cold.

Filters don't cost much to run. An air pump running a sponge filter will use about 6-8watts per hour. Air pumps and most aquarium water pumps are pretty efficient and cheap to run. However, most snails can live in unfiltered tanks as long as the water is kept clean via water changes and you don't put too much food in.

Botias won't normally eat Malaysia livebearing snails because the shell is too hard. You would be better off keeping ramshorn snails because they get eaten by most loaches. They also come in a range of colour forms, live in cold or warm water and breed readily. And if they are fed on lots of plant matter their poo encourages infusoria to grow in the tank, this can be used as fry food.

shame, i dont have any ramshorns. so basically nothing eats mts? because of their hard shells

Mine do. Quite a lot ;). They don't crush the shell, they just either sneak up on the snail and get them before the operculum closes, or be persistent and keep going at the operculum until they can get to the snail. Ramshorns dont have an operculum so the loaches can just suck them out.

But yeah, ramshorns would be much easier to breed, most shops have them in their panted tanks along with tadpole snails (which would also be good to breed).
If you can't find any, you can send me a stamped and addressed envelope and I could you some :).
