Looks like Sturisoma Aureum to me.

edit: whiptail is the common name of Sturisoma.

it's not a whiptail catfish, the nose isn't long enough.
i bought it as a royal farlowella for £20 and someone said it wasn't.
sturisoma of some sort is my best bet but if someone can give a positive id on it, i will be very greatful lol

I'm pretty sure they are. I bought a couple of Sturisoma Festivum about a week ago, and their common name is Royal Whiptails. Whether all Sturisoma are known as whiptails, i'm not sure. Can anyone clarify?

it is a whiptail aka Rineloricaria, sturisoma is the twig catfish which is very very sim according to my research

Looks like a farlowella to me, although I don't really have much interest in catfish, so I doubt my id is correct.
