Some New Arrivals

There are a couple of readily available species of freshwater prawn, what was yours CFC? No problems with mine overnight, still no split fins or missing eyes or anything. I certainly appreciate the words of caution though...
I'm thinking of "altering" him a bit, to err on the side of caution... he only has one large-ish claw that could pose any threat, and would theoretically be perfectly fish safe without it
Not like he uses it to eat or anything... it's a thought. Go ahead, PM me about my cruel ideas :p

Everybody ate today, including the prawn. It was cool to see him come out and snatch bits of food with every available arm.

I just spent about 2 hours rearranging the tank and am about to make a new thread about it
Now Mr. Prawn has a little hidey-hole all his own in a piece of driftwood, he's certainly becoming a favourite!

Very Nice fish

I had some rope fish in the past and they were very fun to watch.

As for the loaches, they look like some kind of sand loach to me. Maybe a Schistura Species? :dunno:

EDIT: Spelling

I offer a very simple solution if Synirr's prawn becomes a problem. They taste great with a garlic/herb butter sauce. :hey:

As far as i can tell my prawn was the exact same one as the one in the picture which i eventually identified as Macrobrachium rosenbergi (not 100% on that spelling but thats what it sounds like). I wish i hadnt sent mine to its unavoidable doom as it was actually a very interesting creature but after eating a £60 catfish i wasnt exactly in a forgiving mood.

I would really recomend investing in a cheap 10 or 15g tank with a little sponge filter for the prawn.

Nice pick ups synirr  I tend to avoid crustaceans like fire, but if any of my big tanks still had room in them I'd get another ropefish :p

OOOh, so you did make it to Fish Paradise!! I was admiring those ropefish last week, almost wanted to throw in the towel on the reef tank and just take one of those badboys home!! :hyper:

CFC -- But Macrobrachium rosenbergii have claws of equal sizes from what I've seen online? Mine has one larger claw and one small one... that might just be a quirk though, of course. I've been trying to ID it, but most of the information to be found about them is in regard to farming them and there's a lack of pictures. Still no problems so far... I've been checking on them every chance I get just to make sure. I've got a spare 10 gallon in the garage if I have to use it, but be it foolhardy or not, I don't wanna jump the gun. These guys get pretty big and I don't want to confine him to a small tank if I don't have to. Once he's full size I think removing his claws would almost be preferable to life in a 10 gallon, being that recent studies suggest crustaceans can't feel pain anyway.

what type of temperament has the rope fish got? really nice but although it looks like a snakehead and a birchir does it behave as bad????

scott
They are peaceful, but will eat anything that fits in their mouths. Bichirs are basically the same I believe, at least senegals are; I have never had a problem with mine being aggressive.

The presence of the smaller claw is probably an injury from a fight or the shipping process, when they lose a claw a new one grows in its place but can take several moults before it reaches an equal size to the remaining claw.

Good luck with it

Ah ok, that explains it
