I have gotten a couple of hints that i might get a tank for christmas. It will either be a 30 or 55 gallon.
I was thinking that i would either stock it with malawi or african cichlids, or angelfish.

What do you guys think would be better?
Of course i would have to think of fish size and tank specifications.

How many of each could i put into a 30 or a 55?
And which kind of fish is easier maintanence?

Thanks.

Maintenance:

African cichlids usually require larger tanks, so if you get a 55 gallon it would be good. They also usually need to be overstocked to help with aggression so a better maintenance schedule needs to be used.

You can usually have a pair of angelfish in a 30g so if you get a 30g I think you should get the angels. You could also have cories and tetras and it would look nice. If you want a heavily planted tank(something you can't do with cichlids) then it requires more maintenance but can be more rewarding.

I just bought my first pair ever of golden ram cichlids about a month ago. They are some the most beautiful and elegant fish I have ever owned. There is such a wide variety of cichlids that I'm looking forward someday to a bigger tank so I can have more.
