You don't need to add salt to the water if there are signs of fin rotting, shimmies and fungus. All you just need to do is seperate it from the other fish[depending on if you have any more than 1 fish]treat the disease with a disease solution and it should be fine in three days[depending on how long it will take]. Instructions should be on the bottle.

which is all well and good, but the chances are that the some of the other occupants of the tank may have been infected, so its probably as wise to treat your entire stock in that tank.

Diseases can also be avoided by keeping a clean enviroment in your tank which invloves good housekeeping and not over feeding.

P.S i would only use salt as a last resort anyway, which generally involves a salt and melafix bath for the affected fish.
