I know there have been centerpiece fish threads before, but not really discussed is solitary fish… many would be intolerant of any tank habitants, 30 years ago I had many tanks of large solitary fish… Oscar’s can become true pets, as they identify their owners and will do tricks to get their attention, and be fed…some ( in the case of my kisser gourami ) just had problems with other gouramis, but seem to tolorate any “other” fish… he was never intended to be a centerpiece fish but his interesting solitary life style suites the word… I have a single angel fish in another tank, that leaves everyone alone, that won’t fit in his mouth ( he will spend all day hunting neon or cardinal tetras ) of which I’ve fed him plenty by accident, previously… that fish will move to my bigger show tank later, just in case someone in that tank wanted to breed, I’m sure he would hunt down every last fry… however the gourami didn’t touch the panda garras, when they were added to the tank a couple years ago, at only a 1/2 inch long… he was added to this tank 3 or so years ago… and now the pandas are adult size… but there are several smaller species of hillstream’s in this tank, several don’t grow much over an inch, and he has no interest in the smaller fish…
seems a lot of solitary fish have big personalities but most are not tolerant of other fish in their tanks… can you think of any other fish that thrives as a solo, but is tolerant of others in their tank???
