My 7 year old Black Moor is dieing. He has been acting weird for a while and this past week he has been swimming very little, not eating, and resting on his side. He cannot get upright at all. At first i thought it may be a swim bladder problem or something so I tried a lot of home remedies for that that i read here but it didn't work. Then i tried some over the counter medicines that i got from my LFS (good store, knowledgable staff) and that didn't work.

Now he isn't moving at all and i have to physically knock on the glass and see if he is moving to check if he is alive. I feel so bad letting him suffer. He has to be suffering after not eating for at least a week and being sideways for at least that long.

So i'm considering euthanisia. I have read all the FAQ on this site but I just can't get up the nerve to CUT OFF HIS HEAD or beat him to kill him. I was hoping you guys could tell me if there is any other way you have done it or anything i could try to help him die with dignity

   thank you on this sad day.

thanks i read this topic before. I am leaning towards overdosing him. I am looking into getting some clove oil or alaselser (sp? i know it's wrong) tablets. or something like that. I heard with people overdosing they just go to sleep and not wake up, so that is what i want to do, i know i can't be violent with him or ask anybody else to be so this is what i can do.

a few years ago i put an angel to sleep with alcohol in the water. but i used old wiskey that my parents didn't drink because it tasted so bad. it took a while but the angel seemed at peace.

any thoughts? please don't yell at me i only want whats best for my old friend i can't stand to see him suffer any longer.

Have you checked all your params and done a water change? I know youve had him a long time but what size tank, filter tank mates, anything new added? Bottom sitting and leaning over is usually bacterial and can mean the swim bladder is infected.
If so then there isnt much you can do except try 50% water changes each day with gravel vacs and clean the filter out.
Im sorry about your sick fish as youve had him so long.
Dont use alka seltzer as that takes oxygen from the water so suffocating and so does over dosing on meds, believe me ive tried it and its not nice. Clove oil is a better way and add 20 drops to enough water to cover him and shake really well with old tank water.
I mean to shake the water before adding the fish

did water change, water prams are normal. where can you usually get clove oil? would that be something walmart might have?

thanks

 Thank you all for your help, however i didn't need to employ any of your suggestions. During my hourly check of the tank i discovered my poor fishy not moving his gill and upon further inspection his mouth was not moving

:rip: little fishy :rip:

Aww im sorry Rayne, maybe it was just his time.

For future reference you can get clove oil at pharmacies, its often sold for toothache.

Sorry to hear about your fish. I had a rope fish for about 6 years and he died from ick. I had a horible outbreak in my tank which I think I saw about 4 different deseases at once. It was horrible.

We get so touched by our little friends just like we do with dogs and cats. Kinda weird but its true.
